Siddhartha

Hermann Hesse

Synopsis

Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha is a profound, poetic exploration of the soul's journey toward true awakening, following a young Brahmin who forsakes a life of privilege to seek the ultimate meaning of existence. Refusing to accept the dogma of others, Siddhartha walks a winding path of extremes—from the severe self-denial of the ascetic Samanas to the intoxicating pursuit of wealth, pleasure, and worldly success alongside the courtesan Kamala. Yet, true liberation eludes him until he crashes into deep despair and finds himself sitting quietly by a river. Through this living teacher and a humble ferryman, Siddhartha ultimately realizes that genuine wisdom cannot be handed down through doctrines or teachings; it must be lived, experienced, and absorbed through the quiet acceptance of life's ever-changing current.
